All EECS computers in The Convocation Center require a login and password to print, and most require them to be used at all. Logins are created when taking a class, and are deleted at different times, depending upon the machine the account is on. The following describes the machine groups in Morton, and a brief summary of the accounting policy.
Ace is a unix server that does the majority of low level server work. It is the print server for the EECS printers, pop and imap mail server, web server for faculty and students homepages, and password athentication for EECS PCs.
Prime is the server for the Sun workstations in room 181 and 183 in the Convocation center, 303 and 307 in Stocker, as well as p1, p2,deuce and several graduate student, faculty and staff machines. All home directories are mounted from prime, and all machines share the same password file. Note that you have to use ssh instead of telnet to login to machines other than prime.
Accounts are given for these work stations when needed for a class. All accounts that start with the number "1" are one quarter accounts, and are deleted at the end of the quarter - usually the week following finals week. Non-majors are allowed to keep their accounts from quarter to quarter, but the accounts are deleted if no CS class is taken doing a quarter. EECS majors are permitted to retain their accounts until they graduate.
